On July 1, 2012, California passed SB 946 mandating that commercial health plans (excluding self-funded plans) cover applied behavior analysis (ABA) services for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). CCBA members provide ABA services to patients with autism through numerous commercial health plans across California. However, CCBA has issued a position statement below, recommending some word changes to SB 946 that would increase the availability of middle-tier professional supervisors and increase access to care for individuals with autism.

CCBA Position Statement for SB 946

On January 1, 2014, The American Medical Association (AMA) issued temporary Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Codes for ABA. Subsequently, an issue of the CPT Assistant was distributed in June 2014 to clarify the use of these codes. CCBA members have many concerns regarding these codes and are sharing this information with the task force that is working on amending these codes. Sample codes that are typically used by CCBA members with health plans are listed below.
